• Sean “Diddy” Combs: The rap artist and record producer has been accused of sexual assault by four different women, including his ex, singer Cassie. Combs denies the allegations, but is under increasing scrutiny after two 2024 Homeland Security raids on his properties in Florida and California related to ongoing cases. These include allegations of “sex-trafficking parties,” underage sexual assaults, and other forms of extreme sexual violence.
• Matt Lauer: The former host of the “Today” show was fired by NBC News after a female colleague made a detailed complaint accusing him of inappropriate sexual behavior during the 2014 Sochi Olympics. The accusation also noted that the alleged behavior continued in the workplace after the games. Lauer admitted to some of the allegations.
• Kevin Spacey: The actor has faced multiple allegations of sexual misconduct. A fellow actor Anthony Rapp accused Spacey of making a sexual advance toward him when he was a child at age 14. Following this, several other individuals came forward with similar allegations, including claims of sexual harassment and assault. Spacey has admitted to some of these allegations, but has been legally cleared of all charges brought against him.
• Russell Brand: This comedian and actor has been accused of rape, sexual assault, and emotional abuse over a seven-year period while he was at the height of his fame. At least four women have alleged sexual assaults between 2006 and 2013. Brand denies the allegations.
• Louis C.K.: The comedian admitted that sexual misconduct allegations made against him by five women are true. The allegations included instances where Louis CK masturbated during interactions with them or asked to do so. He said he had “wielded power irresponsibly” and could hardly wrap his head around the “scope of hurt” he had caused them.

Celebrities Who Have Sexual Assault Convictions

Here is a list of celebrities who have been convicted of sexual assault:

• Bill Cosby: This comedian and media personality was found guilty of three counts of aggravated indecent assault at trial in 2018. He was sentenced to 3-10 years in state prison. However, his conviction was later overturned, finding that Cosby was unfairly prosecuted because a district attorney had promised him that he wouldn’t be charged over certain accusations. Cosby was released from prison after serving nearly 3 years.
• Harvey Weinstein: The former Hollywood mogul was found guilty of several charges related to sexual assault and rape, and was sentenced to 23 years in prison. He is still serving his prison sentence.
• Danny Masterson: The actor known for his role in “That ’70s Show” was convicted of raping two women. The incidents reportedly took place in Masterson’s Hollywood home in 2003. After a retrial involving three women, a jury found him guilty of two counts, and he was sentenced to 30 years to life in prison, with two 15-year sentences to be served consecutively, one for each charge. As a result of the conviction, he must also register as a sex offender. Masterson is currently in prison.
• R. Kelly (Robert Sylvester Kelly): This singer, songwriter, and music producer has been convicted of several sexual abuse charges, including sex trafficking, child sexual abuse, and enticement of minors. Kelly is currently serving simultaneous 20-year and 30-year prison sentences for his crimes.

When There Is No Criminal Case: Civil Claims Against Powerful People

Most survivors of a powerful abuser never see a criminal trial. Prosecutors decline cases, deadlines run out, and settlements get signed long before anyone files a charge. A civil claim is a separate path, and it doesn’t wait on a prosecutor.

Harvey Weinstein is the clearest illustration of how that gap opens. Before any criminal charge was filed, he reached more than eight settlements with women over allegations that included unwanted physical contact and sexual harassment, with reported payouts ranging from roughly $80,000 into the millions. Many of those settlements carried confidentiality clauses. Employees separately signed contracts agreeing not to criticize the company or its leaders in ways that could damage their reputations. More than 30 accusers eventually described the same pattern stretching across three decades.

Lauren O’Connor, a former Weinstein Company employee, set out the imbalance in an internal memo: “I am a 28-year-old woman trying to make a living and a career. Harvey Weinstein is a 64-year-old, world famous man and this is his company. The balance of power is me: 0, Harvey Weinstein: 10.”

That imbalance is what a civil claim is built to answer. You file it yourself instead of waiting for the state to act. The standard of proof is “more likely than not” rather than “beyond a reasonable doubt.” And you can bring one even when no criminal charges were ever filed, or when a criminal case ended without a conviction.

The paperwork can’t stop you either. Since 2022, an employer can no longer force a sexual assault or harassment claim into private arbitration, and a nondisclosure clause signed before anything happened won’t hold up in one of these disputes. A civil finding is not a criminal conviction, and the difference matters. In the case of writer E. Jean Carroll against media personality and former president Donald Trump, a jury found that Carroll had proven “by a preponderance of the evidence” that “Mr. Trump sexually abused Ms. Carroll” in a Manhattan department store in the 1990s. It marked the first time a former president was found civilly liable for sexual misconduct. Jurors decided Trump must pay Carroll $5 million in damages for her battery and defamation claims, and he was later ordered to pay an additional $83.3 million for defamation.

The Case That Changed California Sentencing Law

Not every case that reshapes the law involves a celebrity. In 2016, a Stanford University student named Brock Turner was convicted of sexually assaulting an unconscious woman, and the sentencing judge granted probation with six months in county jail. The public response pushed two bills through the California Legislature that same year, and a court can no longer grant probation for that kind of offense. Santa Clara County voters recalled the sentencing judge in June 2018.
